Finding a good match for therapy can be hard. Here are some examples of the types of individuals who show up in my practice.

Please note that these are fictionalized examples and not based on real people.

Perfectionism

Your brain feels like a hamster wheel, it cycles non-stop. You’re tentative to lower your standards, but you’re also exhausted of the upkeep those standards require. Perhaps you dream about enough alone time just so that you can get “caught up” on all of your projects, but there’s never a time time in the day to feel like it’s going to be “enough”. The idea of failure is not an option, and yet you may struggle with procrastination, avoidance and/or burnout.

Emotion Dysregulation

Your big feelings can be both a superpower and a challenge. It might seem like you’re constantly holding “it” together, or perhaps you have so many feelings that you’re at the point of feeling numb or empty. You might describe yourself as “sensitive”, which can be both a positive and a negative thing in your life. You often “crash out” or have large flare ups of emotion, and want to learn to “respond” rather than impulsively react to different situations.

Anxiety + Depression

You’re always thinking about the worst-case scenario. You may think of yourself as being “prepared”, and yet there is an overwhelming sense of doom or overwhelm about your life, relationships or the world at large. Periods of feeling overwhelmed, sad or even numb can pop up for you, or perhaps these periods get chronic and constant. Difficulties with concentration, irritability, demotivation and/or social isolation are examples of symptoms that can create additional challenges in your day to day life.

Neurodiversity

Whether or not you have received a formal diagnosis, you’ve noticed that your brain operates differently than the people around you. Perhaps you feel like you have to work twice as hard to achieve a similar result to your peers. Missing social cues, all-or-nothing thinking, and struggling with detail-oriented tasks are just a part of your daily experiencing.

Attachment + Relationship Problems

Conflict is very hard and rejection feels very personal. You may endorse being a “people pleaser” to mitigate hard conversations. “Taking space” from a loved one can either be incredibly relieving or incredibly anxiety provoking. You want to have healthy, stable relationships, and also can struggle with feeling equipped with the correct tools to facilitate them.
