Did I ghost my therapist?

We’ve all been there. We forget to respond to an email, or maybe life gets busy and making it to a regular therapy session doesn’t feel possible. Perhaps it’s been a while since your last appointment and you’re thinking that a check-in might be beneficial. This leaves a question - will my therapist still see me? Even if I ghosted them?

The answer is most likely yes. Dependent on the setting, your therapist is just like any other allied healthcare provider in the sense that you can always reach out when you’re in need of care, regardless of the date of your last appointment. For example, you might not see a dentist frequently, or perhaps you’ve postponed your last cleaning. However, you’d still likely feel comfortable reaching out to them, should a dental issue arise, regardless of the frequency/last point of contact.

It’s understandable that therapy can feel different, or sometimes more personal, than other healthcare providers due to the rapport you may build with your therapist. However, knowing your history and observing interpersonal patterns can be a helpful tool for your therapist to help facilitate goals.

While I wouldn’t recommend ghosting your therapist if you can avoid it, it does happen! Good therapy can mean working through any concerns around booking a new session or questions about getting back in touch.
